When Howard Hawks gave Lauren Bacall the choice to either work on a picture with Cary Grant or Humphrey Bogart, Bacall wanted to work with Cary Grant. Hawks ignored her choice and cast her alongside Bogart in To Have and Have Not instead.

To Have and Have Not was based on the book by Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway. The screenplay was written in part by another Nobel Prize winner, William Faulkner.
