When Howard Hawks gave Lauren Bacall the choice to either work on a picture with Cary Grant or Humphrey Bogart, Bacall wanted to work with Cary Grant. Hawks ignored her choice and cast her alongside Bogart in To Have and Have Not instead.

There is a rumor that Lauren Bacall did not do her own singing in To Have and Have Not, and that a 14 year old Andy Williams provided the singing voice heard in the film. But, after searching through studio call sheets, author Eric Lax determined Bacall did her own singing.

At Humphrey Bogart’s funeral in 1957, Lauren Bacall (Bogart’s wife) placed a whistle in his coffin. This was a reference to the famous line “You know how to whistle, don’t you? You just put your lips together and blow.” from To Have and Have Not.

Lauren Bacall made her film debut in To Have and Have Not. She was nineteen years old. Howard Hawks’ wife saw Bacall on the cover of an issue of Harper’s Bazaar and showed her husband. Hawks sought out Bacall and signed her for the role of Marie in the film.

To Have and Have Not was based on the book by Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway. The screenplay was written in part by another Nobel Prize winner, William Faulkner.
