Bringing Up Baby did not do well at box office. It was not a failure, it broke even, and made a profit of $13,000. Because the film was not a major success RKO removed Howard Hawks from his next film at the studio, and Katharine Hepburn was put on the “Box Office Poisson” list. Since it’s first release Bringing Up Baby has become recognized as one of the best comedy films of all time.
Katharine Hepburn was having difficulty with her comedic timing in Bringing Up Baby, director Howard Hawks said that Kate was “trying too hard to be funny”, she continually began laughing out loud while shooting scenes. She had never done any real slapstick comedy like what was in Bringing Up Baby, so she was trained in gags and comedic timing by several veteran vaudevillians including Walter Catlett who played Constable Slocum in the film.
When Howard Hawks gave Lauren Bacall the choice to either work on a picture with Cary Grant or Humphrey Bogart, Bacall wanted to work with Cary Grant. Hawks ignored her choice and cast her alongside Bogart in To Have and Have Not instead.
