The set of the film was so large that it wouldn’t fit inside the sound stage. To solve the problem, Alfred Hitchcock ordered the production company to tear out the entire floor, revealing the basement. This gave them enough room to film, and the court of the apartment building is actually the basement of a studio at Paramount.
