The Children’s Hour was a remake of These Three (1936). These Three was based on a play by the name of The Children’s Hour. Because of the homosexual themes of the play, the Hayes Code wouldn’t allow the original name to be used in any way shape or form related to the film. This included the publicity of the film, and any scenes onscreen. At the time the Code was strict and did not permit any display of homosexuality and William Wyler was forced to make change the lesbian affair rumor into a rumor that one of the teacher’s was sleeping with the other’s fiancé. Later in 1961 when the Code was less strict William Wyler remade the film using the original title, The Children’s Hour, and was permitted to discreetly keep the lesbian theme of the film.
