Ernest Lubitsch wanted the Shop Around the Corner to be different from the glamour films he had been known for. He would even go to such lengths as to order a dress Margaret Sullavan had bought off the rack for $1.98 to be set in the sun and bleach, then alter it to fit badly. After principal photographer was finished on the film Lubitsch gave an interview to the New York Sun, in which he said “It’s not a big picture, just a quiet little story that seemed to have some charm. It didn’t cost very much, for such a cast, under $500,000. It was made in twenty-eight days. I hope it has some charm.”
