Hello Dolly was 20th Century Fox’s third attempt to duplicate the success of the Sound of Music. In 1967 they released Doctor Dolittle, and in 1968 they released Star! with Julie Andrews. Unfortunatly none of the films were as successful as the Sound of Music, because film attendance dropped and the studio was paying massive amounts of money to market the films. This caused the films to all lose money (even though Hello Dolly was one 1969’s highest grossing films), and ultimately several top studio executives lost their jobs, and the studio went into such a financial slump that it only made one film in 1970.
