Others who were considered for the role of Dolly included Elizabeth Taylor, Doris Day, Shirley MacLaine and Julie Andrews. Carol Channing who had played Dolly in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly! (on which the film is based) was never considered because, though she did have one Oscar nomination under her belt, could not carry of large scale musical.
