William Wyler was brought in to direct Funny Girl after Sidney Lumet was fired, do to differences with producer Ray Stark and Barbra Streisand. Originally Wyler declined the offer to direct the picture, because he was deaf in one ear and felt he wouldn’t be able to direct a musical. He changed his mind when he met Streisand.
