Ross Hunter said that after he had made Pillow Talk no theatre managers wanted to show it because they felt audiences didn’t want to see romantic comedies (popular films genres at the time were westerns, and war films). They told Hunter that comedies like Pillow Talk went out with William Powell, and that Rock Hudson and Doris Day were screen stars of the past. Finally Hunter managed to persuade Sol Schwartz, owner of the Palace Theatre in New York, to book the film for a two week run, and it turned out to be a smash hit.
